I don't know how this author does it. This is a book in which essentially nothing happens and yet every single page is delicious. Of course, that's hyperbole; a few things happen. But nothing major, no earth shattering events. This book is like a series of meetings and conversations that Nathan and Derringer have and it is all strung together to make a story about love, commitment, loyalty, integrity, and honesty. Nathan and Derringer both have all of those qualities. These boys just needed to figure out their true feelings underneath all the garbage that Nathan's brother Andrew brought into their lives.I liked Derringer so much, I just wish he had been a little more capable of standing up for himself when he was with Andrew in his past. It's painful to think of all the terrible ways Andrew treated Derringer. Derringer was able to see that Nathan needed to be a little tougher with his family; too bad it takes Nathan so long to figure that out.
There is some pretty, poetic writing in this book and I just love that. A few examples:
"Please go away, and take your half-assed promises of hope with you when you leave, because I can't take another second of them sitting on my windpipe, choking the life from me every minute of the day."
"When I haven't heard from you in a while, I start feeling like I'm suffocating. Then you call, and it's like the first real breath of fresh air fills my lungs in forever."
"Your kisses fix everything. They're like magic."
And of course there's more like the above. :) This may not have been my favorite book of this series, but I enjoyed it immensely and I did shed a tear or two. I have already pre-ordered Luka's book, which is up next. Looking forward to it.

The only reason that I gave it two stars is because I liked it up until seventy-some percent when it completely derailed for me. If Ms Parkerson hadn't taken the easy, clichéd way from that point it could have been a 3-4 star. Sadly, as this series goes on I've come to the conclusion that the most important thing to the author is to get a book out quickly whether or not it's written as well as it could be.
Even after 8 books I am still captivated with this series. Derringer and Nathan's story brings together two men who seem to have spent their lives being walked over by everyone important to them. Drawn together by lust and long standing unspoken attraction they forge a strong bond which grows into something they both never thought they'd have together. However nothing is ever simple in the lives of the Hard Hit men! Another hot emotional read from Parkerson.
This series is just amazingly addictive. This story about Nathan and Derringer was kind of sad but the insta-wet moments were hot, hot and extremely HOT. I just wish there could've been more character development. I wanted to know more about both of them. I can't wait for the next installment, they just keep getting better. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND THIS AFFORDABLE SERIES!!!!
I love this series and was anxiously waiting for Nathan's story after the last book. As always, this was another wonderfully written and emotionally engaging story. There were a few places were the main character's names were misplaced which could make the scene confusing, but all in all this was another great read by Parkerson. I read it as soon as it was released and already have the next one on order.
I really enjoyed the story of Nathan & Derringer. I liked who they both are as people. Nathan struggles with crushing on this brother's ex & Derringer doesn't believe Nathan is serious about wanting him. I loved watching their relationship evolve. I did find one or two mistakes & had to re read a sentence or two to understand that it was a mistake & not me reading it wrong but it didn't take me out of the story too much. Overall, I would happily recommend this book & look forward to the next one (already pre ordered).
I absolutely loved this story about Nathan and Derringer! Derringer is Nathan's brothers ex and that in and of itself brings a boat load of trouble. When Nathan's brother seeks revenge things get worse but nothing can come in the way of true love.
On a side note, if you haven't read the ugly eternity series, book three is Jamie and Hawke and that's my favorite book in that series so I highly recommend it.
Ever since I first "met" Derringer in the Spent (Wrecked book 2) I've been hoping he would get his own story. I'm really glad he did! I cried a lot of big ugly tears reading this book. There were more than a few times that I wanted to smack the you know what out of Nathan, but I was quite satisfied with the ending. Charity Parkerson has also created a character that dies a horrible death at a later date!
This book is a wonderful addition to the world(s) that the author has created! And there was a cross-over visit from my absolute favorite character and his outrageous husband!! Yay!! If you've enjoyed the world of the Hard Hit books, or really any of the books in this "world", you are going to really enjoy Defend!
